Yeah, I know about this "feature" but thought it was disabled somehow
at Savannah. If I understand correctly, anyone can activate it by
accident? I think I'm beginning to realize why so many people dislike
CVS...

Many thanks for this, as usual.
I see now that new checkouts are rw, but existing working copies are
still 444, although any new modifications of those files immediately
make them 644. That's not a problem.

Still waiting for the sysadmins. Sometimes it takes time.
