I looks like it works to me:

$ cvs -d:pserver:address@hidden:/sources/emacs co emacs
cvs checkout: Updating emacs
U emacs/.arch-inventory
U emacs/.cvsignore
U emacs/.dir-locals.el
U emacs/.gitignore

$ nc -v cvs.sv.gnu.org 2401
DNS fwd/rev mismatch: cvs.sv.gnu.org != nsavannah3.gnu.org
cvs.sv.gnu.org [140.186.70.72] 2401 (cvspserver) open
BEGIN AUTH REQUEST
/sources/emacs
anonymous
A
END AUTH REQUEST
I LOVE YOU

Note that the CVS pserver lies in the vcs-noshell DomU.

Please give me the complete command that you typed.
