The vcs server is generally overloaded and becomes more so when there
is a lot of activity. Sometimes that activity is a DDoS attack.
Sometimes it is normal usage but simply more than the server can
handle. That was the problem on the 19th when the system was
overloaded. It was impossible to tell if it was an attack or too much
normal usage. Load spikes to 750 were recorded. It could have been a
slashdot effect due to the latest glibc update or it might have been
an attack. It was impossible to say.

There was no actual restoration of git or anything else. Nothing has
been changed. The system was rebooted but the load spike resumed
immediately rendering the system unusable again. Since the activity
was external to vcs the workaround was simply stopping services to
stop the overload, waiting for clients to time out and go away, then
turning services back on and monitoring the system load and hoping
that the external clients would not all hit it all at once again. It
took over an hour of this but eventually the system load became stable
again.

The FSF maintain an out-of-band status update page. This is sometimes
forgotten to be updated during emergencies but the idea is that this
will be a communication path even when FSF servers are down.

Also note that git, svn, cvs, hg, bzr and anything else that has to do
with version control all reside on the vcs server. Sometimes people
think that git and svn and hg and such are somehow different servers
but they are all the same system.

When I look at it now it looks like it has been updating. The latest
entry is from 34 minutes ago. I have no ability to debug why it
wasn't updating for you earlier. It seems to be okay now.

Bob

P.S. Note that I am just one of the Savannah volunteers and not one of
the FSF admins. I suffer from the problems right along with the rest
of you. (Don't shoot the messenger and all of that.)
