I think limited access log files is the first thing to do,
since it seems it would be relatively easy, and then people
can compile whatever statistics they want.

But parsed logs would be good also if you have the time. I
was using awstats, but webalizer looks at least as good. To
use logs you basically need to parse them anyway, and most
people will never want anything more than webalizer, so
setting that up once would be more efficient than everyone
setting up webalizer or whatever on their own computer.

If you get all of this working, then you could try to
compile some "top 10" lists, like most visited software
projects, etc. But Freshmeat already keeps some of this
information, so I think this is less important.

A complicating factor is that some of the statistics will be
from the cvs-managed homepages (like www.nongnu.org/project)
and some will be from the savannah project pages. Ideally
the stats from both of these would be available (and
integrated if you parse the logs for us). But if that is
hard, it would still be very useful to have file download
(savannah/download/project) and web page statistics.

I agree with you.

Please, give me details about what you want:
 - direct access to the logs (in which case, access limited
to projects members) related to the project
  - results of parsed logs by a program (which one, webalizer ?)
