Yes, I can login to fencepost.gnu.org, but I am pretty sure that I
have always used gnu.org.
My known_hostst file lists gnu.org with IP address 199.232.76.164.
I can see that fencepost.gnu.org has that IP address now, while
gnu.org has a different IP address.
Perhaps the gnu.org IP address was changed recently ?
