Hi Pavel -- thanks for the info. The thing is, none of us here have any
power to change the archiving code right now, only FSF sysadmins can do that.
And there's nothing to be gained to talking to them right now about a patch,
because, as I said initially, there's already a project underway to update the
archiving. And the results of that will (do already) handle UTF-8 properly.
Aside: so Perl 5.10 changed the semantics of (un)pack. How depressing.
