I also experience this now.
On one host (in a data centre), I get repeating sequences of:
:; git clone git://git.sv.gnu.org/freetype/freetype2.git
Cloning into 'freetype2'...
fatal: read error: Connection reset by peer
:; git clone git://git.sv.gnu.org/freetype/freetype2.git
Cloning into 'freetype2'...
fatal: The remote end hung up unexpectedly
On another host (DOCSIS), I only get Connection reset by peer.
