==== Description: ====
The GNU Metadata Exchange Utilities are a package for retrieving metadata
from servers, writing it to databases, query the databases, and representing
the results in human-readable form. It is intended that the package be
extended so that it can be used for providing metadata as well as harvesting
it.

It is the successor of the IWF Metadata Harvester, which is a non-GNU project
hosted at Savannah. The short name of the old project is `iwf-mdh'. The
source code is located here:
http://cvs.savannah.nongnu.org/viewcvs/?root=iwf-mdh

The webpages are located here:
http://web.cvs.savannah.nongnu.org/viewcvs/?root=iwf-mdh

==== Other Software Required: ====
The GNU Metadata Exchange Utitilies will not depend on any packages,
libraries, etc., that aren't commonly found on Free Operating systems unless
they are also free. For example, the maintainer plans to implement support
for free database software such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, and nosql, which may
not be included in a given operating system distribution.

The IWF Metadata Harvester depended on Microsoft products. The code affected
by these dependencies will not be included in the GNU Metadata Exchange
Utilities except as a way of making them run on a Microsoft system, and only
if this functionality is available for free systems.

It may be necessary to include some of this code in the files uploaded to
Savannah as a temporary measure, before the maintainer is able to port all of
the code to GNU/Linux. The maintainer considers all code of this type to be
non-functional and will avoid uploading it wherever possible.

==== Other Comments: ====
The project has been approved by rms and the Savannah hackers have been
informed of this.
