It turns out I'm having non-screen problems.

I tried setting
>     PROMPT_COMMAND='echo -n -e "\033k\033\134"'
>     TITLEBAR='\033]0;address@hidden   \w \007'
>     PS1=${TITLEBAR}'\[\033[1;34m\][\!]\$ \[\033[0m\]' 
in a regular shell, I get the same problem mentioned in the parent
thread.

I know this post is now off-topic, but given that, I don't have a good
idea where to go next.

So, if anyone has run into this, I'd appreciate any kind of out-of-band
help, thanks.
