what does the 'current load' escape %l show?

what does the 'current load' escape %l show? |

I see here http://www.delorie.com/gnu/docs/screen/screen_138.html that
I can use %l in my hardstatus string to see "current load of the
system" This returns 3 floating decimals. However, I'm not sure what
they are.
Anyone know?
