Take a look at the "zombie" setting.

With

zombie kr

you tell screen not to close windows but to wait for either the key k or
r which then either (k)ill the window or (r)erun the program. This is
very handy if you sometimes close your application by mistake (which
happens regularly to me with mutt... :) You don't have to restart the
application, but just press r and voila your application reappears... :)
