gnu screen: extremely slow when resuming detached session

I'm still awaiting here for the following command to return:
address@hidden:~$ screen -dR work

it has been 10+ minutes and there is no response...

I've been seeing this from time to time , but not always..
under what condition does this happen and how to narrow down/workaround the problem?
