Ok, this is my only chance to post on this before I get back from my
vacation next week:
I tried using binutils 2.16.1, that didn't work. I downgraded to
binutils 2.16, that worked.
to summarize, I used:
binutils-2.16
gcc-3.4.6
and:
$ swig -version
SWIG Version 1.3.25

I know it is not a very "nice" answer, but I expect this might give you
some hints. Really this should all probably work better than it does. I
have not spent the time it takes to upgrade it though.
