First: are you executing avr-gdb, and not just gdb? Is it executing the correct
version?
If yes, and yes, then this sounds like some BFD issue (which is a part of
binutils). Can you build the AVR port of binutils first, then build avr-gdb?
Make sure that the installation of the AVR port of binutils is in your PATH
when you build avr-gdb.
