Hello, although it was decided that we wouldn't work till 26th July, I've
started to read LSB specification
about packages (
http://www.linuxbase.org/spec/refspecs/LSB_1.3.0/gLSB/gLSB/swinstall.html )
and I was kinda surprised when i read:

"Applications should be provided in the RPM packaging format as defined in this
specification.
Distributions must provide a mechanism for installing applications in this
packaging format with some restrictions listed below."

And the restrictions are:

"The distribution itself may use a different packaging format for its own
packages, and of course it may use any available mechanism for installing the
LSB-conformant packages."

So, basically, what LSB says is that a LSB distro must have RPM implemented,
right? So, LSB doesn't give a package standard in the way
where files should be installed and so on; it only defines how RPMs must be!

So, this means that we will not follow this spec, right?

Resuming what we have been saying around here, these are the features the
packager must support:

 - Dependencies between packages
 - Server fetching
 - Install, Remove, Upgrade (including from server, like apt)

I was talking with a friend of mine, who's a Perl geek and a convict slacker,
and he's very interested in this
project :) He works in my university as a researcher :) What do you think about
inviting him to join the team?

By the way, after MCP 2003 we'll have to create a formal specification of the
packager so we can follow :) The
packages tree will have to be very good and eficient! We must decide which data
structures we'll use and which
algorithms, etc... :)

It's all folks...

Take care and good work with your school affairs :)
