changing default app in preferences

Hi,
  New user here. Just checking out your works. Looks very interesting.

  One problem I'm having right now is choosing a different app to
play the audio. I run Gentoo and xmms is no longer maintained in
portage. With streamtuner I found the preferences window and have
tried typing in a different application to play the streams but the
strings I type in don't stick. I can change to the General tab and
come back and it has returned to xmms %q.

  What's the trick to get these changes to be permanent?
