Thanks JJ for the pointer towards using index
for doing what I want...I'll take a look.

(I knew from the examples I had looked at that
i could use index-next to cycle thru the list,
but I didn't know it would give me fast access to
an arbitrary n-th item.)

And thanks to Roger for a nice high level explantion
of what's going on under List.   I'll try to follow
some of the pointers you gave to see what can be done.
(I knew about the trick of including a class in another,
eg to get multiple inheritance, but I figured there
must be a cheaper, easier way.)
