Glen's routine should work fine; a good reference for this kind of thing is:
Stevens, W. R. (1992). Advanced Programming in the UNIX Environment.
Addison-Wesley. pp. 155-159.
O'Reilly & Assoc. also has a couple of books out on POSIX programming.
