Rick,
I made sure to re-make everything within the models (heatbugs,
village,...) even adding benign edits so that the make would create a
new linked .o -- still no go.

I compared the 1.0.1 files with the 1.0.3.  (The probes work great with
1.0.1.)
The only basic differences I found were the use of `unsigned' instead of
`int', and the case of zoomFactor = 1U instead of = 1 (subsequently
modified by +/- 1U instead of +/- 1).  

Attempting to make that which doesn't work, more like that which does,
led me on a compiling chase through widget, raster, entry,...  None of
which helped.

Use of the probes is highly desirable for the modelling exercises I want
to explore, so I would like to get this fixed.  I'll keep trying to
figure out why your fix didn't work on my machine, but if any other
ideas arise, please pass them along.
