The usual problem is that 
 1. you got the wrong version of the swarm package
for your computer,
 2.  you did not make all the necessary
settings in the Makefile.conf, 
 3. you have not set the necessary environment
variables (if you have a binary install).

You may have all three problems, it is hard to tell without more detail.

In the FAQ, details on 2 and 3 are spelled out. As tothe first, with
Redhat 5 you need a package for glibc, and if you have the "out of the
box" redhat 5, you do not want one of the compiled with gcc2.8, since
the out of the box has 2.7.2 (as I recall).

If you don't get it to work, I'm delighted to help you. Please email me
directly with information about what steps you have taken--binary or
archive install, which version, etc.
