Installing under Linux

I am trying to install Swarm 1.1 under Linux, the Slackware version 3.4 with
gcc 2.7.2, etc, and I am running into problems because I do not have libffi.a
 I don't even know what this library is, so I'm stumped.  Any suggestions on
where I can find this, and can someone tell me what it is?  Thanks.
