I've actually discovered this phenomemon in a piece of Java/
JFC code, however, in that case, it turned out to be a
threading problem and it could be solved by synchronizing
the code block  (or using the print statement ;-).  Sorry, I
guess that isn't much help.

Have you tried isolating the suspect code in its own little
test program?

Also you could try fprintf or sprintf to see if they too
have the same miraculous capabilities.  Of course, whatever
the outcome it would just add to the mystery insteading of
helping solve it.
