swarm-1.2 compilation problem: libtool :print

After I did this configure (under hpux 9.05):

./configure --with-defaultdir=/usr/local --prefix=/s/Swarm/swarm-1.2 
--with-ffcalldir --with-zlibincludedir=/usr/local/include 
--with-pngincludedir=/usr/local/include

and then did a 

   make

after a bit I got this:

make[3]: Leaving directory `/s/Swarm/swarm-1.2/src/misc'
Making all in collections
make[3]: Entering directory `/s/Swarm/swarm-1.2/src/collections'
/bin/sh ../../libtool --mode=compile gcc -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I. -I. -I../.. 
-I.. -I./.. -I./../defobj  -g -O2 -Wno-import -c Array.m
../../libtool: print: not found
../../libtool: print: not found
...

and a bunch more of the same complaint, before make stopped.

Any idea what I need to do about this?
What is this "print" that libtool can't find?
(libtool is there, of course.)
