Thanks - swarm and the demos now work!
In case it's of use to anyone else, the essential steps and pitfalls
in installing swarm in /usr/local on my O2 under IRIX6.5 were as
follows:
    install gcc-2.8.1 and libstdc++
            http://www-it.et.tudelft.nl/~erik/gcc/ is a useful guide,
            http://reality.sgi.com/ariel/freeware/#gcc allows
installation directly from sgi

    download and install tcl/tk8.0, BLT2.4 (I couldn't make 8.0unoff
happy), libffi-1.20, libpng, and zlib from SantaFe.

    download swarm/swarmapps-1.4
In swarm-1.4, create a directory /xpm, containing another directory
/lib, containing a link 'libXpm.so' to /usr/lib32/libXpm.so.1 (at least
that's where it is on my machine). Otherwise, swarm doesn't find the Xpm
library of the appropriate calling convention (n32).

'setenv CFLAGS -O2' to avoid lethal debugger confusion
    ./configure --with-xpmdir=/usr/local/swarm-1.4/xpm --disable-shared'

    'gmake'
'gmake check' but ignore the absence of
"Holder.h"
    gmake install

Then on to the demo apps, setting SWARMHOME=/usr/local in the
relevant Makefiles.

Errors were generated at various stages by the continued presence of
libraries from previous attempts at installation, also from earlier
versions of swarm. /usr/local/lib required occasional hand-cleaning.

    Jonathan
