objective c and the death of java? |

A friend of mine has been working fairly closely with SUN (he is the
co-head of the LinuxPPC project) and, in his opinion, JAVA will
probably dissappear at some point, largely due to the performance
issue-- it is a toy, basically. I learned JAVA before I knew even C,
and find Obj C to be far superior -- the only real reason to use Java
over something else is if you want to embed the applet in a web page
for others to use (distribution for obj-c swarm programs is a
nightmare-- compilation on other systems can be incredibly difficult,
especially if they don't have swarm, RPM or you don't have access to
other architectures... ) The sim I recently wrote takes 8 HOURS to
run on my PowerMac 7500/100 written in Obj C, with a JAVA JIT
Compiler I'd have to come back a month later to get my results...
Just my two cents...
