That capability is in the Emacs 21 development sources. (No, I don't
know the release schedule.)

"ls --color=auto" should already be a default provided in
~/.bash_login. If you are re-asserting this, it should still
work, but you don't need to. `ls' in a M-x shell (as configured by
default) works fine for me.
