The version information is in the tar ball.
These tar balls are in the format of FreeBSD Porting Collection,
which help building application on FreeBSD.
It contains an Makefile for downloading the source,
patches for FreeBSD, building and install information.
Just like source rpms on Redhat but there is no application source in it.
