MessageProbe speed-ups

Today's snapshot has a substantial speed-up to MessageProbe.
The total speed-up I see for batch runs ranges from 15%-30% percent,
depending on the amount of information being logged.  (Java models that
record a lot of information will see the largest performance increment.)
