libtool is a very complex Bourne shell script, and it seems to have some
trouble operating in the right way with Mac OS X's /bin/sh.  If you 
run "make SHELL=/packages/bin/bash" where /packages/bin/bash is
built from ftp://ftp.swarm.org/pub/gnu/bash/bash-2.05a.tar.gz, it should
get past this.
