In unix/linux, files that start with . (dot) are typically
configuration files of one kind or another for various programs.
They can be displayed by including the -a on the ls command, eg:
ls -a ~
will show all files, dot and otherwise, in your $HOME directory.
Use
man ls
to see more about options on the ls command.
