I am trying to compile swarm using libtool 1.5, to check against what 
you are doing.
It did work for me. (using the command-line build; having replaced 
ltmain.sh config.sub config.guess by those from libtool 1.5; of course 
I had to make sure a GNU sed and gcc 3.3 were in the PATH)
I cannot explain your error; I get llibswarm in the standard location.

P.S.: Oh, by the way, you have to define the EGREP variable 
appropriately, or libtool complains that it cannot use most libraries: 
here is an example.
