[Swftools-common] upgrade freetype?

Hi,

We've got a major problem with a client application and CentOS and pdf2swf:
When converting a specific page in a PDF, we get the following error:

 pdf2swf -p 3 pdf.pdf pdf.swf
NOTICE  processing PDF page 3 (595x595:0:0) (move:0:0)
NOTICE  File contains jpeg pictures
NOTICE  File contains soft masks
NOTICE  File contains forms
NOTICE  File contains transparency groups
Segmentation fault

After hours of googling the error and trying various things like upgrading freetype (which didn't seem to have happened correctly), I give up and try this.
Can you please help?

If someone here knows how to upgrade freetype by installing it from source on CentOS 4.x, we would appreciate some tips.

I tried 
./configure; make && make install
which seemed to have worked, no error, but that didn't fix the problem.
