It isn't really 'messing with the organization of the source code', it
is doing a proper migration to a new version control system.  If I had
spare time available to do it, I would have done so many years ago.  But
the fact that I lack spare time, do not make it less important to do it
properly.  It is important for copyright tracking and attribution, as
well as provide clues and information to future developers of the code.
Dropping the code history is a very bad idea.

Do you lack the skills required to migrate a Subversion repository to
git?  The procedure is well documented on several web pages, and the
tools available are quite good.  If you need more information, I am
happy to give guidance via IRC, the #pkg-sysvinit IRC channel on
irc.debian.org.
