What if that someone needs to make a manual compatible with both old
and new versions?
Perhaps at least NEWS should say that those variables are deprecated,
and the commands replace those variables. Right now, NEWS also
doesn't mention the variables' names, which IMO is really weird, as
far as NEWS files go.
