Joris,
looking further to the reasons for the crashes experimented by Hu and
Liddicott, I found that TeXmacs crashes when there is an empty preamble and an
empty document. For example the following document crashes on loading

<TeXmacs|1.0.7.6>
<style|generic>
<\body>
<\hide-preamble>
</hide-preamble>
</body>
------------------
And you can crash TeXmacs by creating a document, creating a preamble, leaving
it empty (or not), returning to the empty document and then pressing backspace.
This goes back as far as r3000 in svn. Note that until r3099 the crash reported
by Liddicott (with his particular file) does not happen.
Probably the two problems are related.
