Hi, Michael!

$ is one of the shortcuts for entering into special mode. In your case
"$" enters in Formula mode. Use "\$" + <hit enter> in order to insert
$. As for the other questions - sorry, do not know. I am actually
contributer rather than TeXmacs user.
