All I needed to do is

export TEXMACS_PATH=/home/ko/build/TeXmacs-1.99.3-9747M-i386-pc-linux-gnu

Afterwards, I do

PDF export works fine, thank you!

I would be interested to know why I have the export problem when I
compile the same version on FreeBSD.
