No worries here.  Hope you have a good time.

I should have said in my previous email that I am using 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex).

I have played around with the conf files (turning off the network,
etc.) and I have tried the standard GNOME terminal and xterm; results
are the same.

I'll post more if I discover anything new in my troubleshooting.
