Ok, for future reference, I had to add -lz to line 3858 in the configure 
script which looks like this:

  eval "ac_cv_lib_$ac_lib_var=\"mysqlclient \""

Changed to:

  eval "ac_cv_lib_$ac_lib_var=\"mysqlclient -lz \""

I don't understand configure scripts, but this seems to work ok. Test 
passes, compile works, and mysql support works.
