start-stop-daemon checks for the existence of processes and exits with
error status 1 if the process is already running (see man
start-stop-daemon). Furthermore, how would you expect the init script to
know which instance of tpop3d should be stopped when you do
/etc/init.d/tpop3d stop?
This is a Gentoo baselayout question if you ask me, so please ask your
question there.
Regards,
Maurice.
