tramp (2.0.55); Remote filename completion hangs

Another useful thing to do is to put (setq tramp-debug-buffer t) in
the ~/.emacs file and to repeat the bug.  Then, include the contents
of the *tramp/foo* buffer and the *debug tramp/foo* buffer in your bug
report.

I'm running emacs 22 on a Windows XP machine. I have activated
partial-completion-mode in order to get remote filename completion working,
per the manual. When trying to retrieve a file from a remote machine, via:

C-x C-f /address@hidden:~/directory/file.txt

Any time I hit TAB in that line (after the colon), emacs just hangs
indefinitely. I've tried using both ftp and ssh as default methods; it
doesn't seem to make a difference. I do have the modified EmacsW32 ftp.exe
executable in my emacs\bin directory, which is also in my path; I do NOT
have cygwin installed.

No debug buffer was created, sorry.

If I unload tramp and use ange-ftp, then it works fine. (However, if I do
that, then filename completion doesn't expand top-level directories on my
machine -- a strange and probably unrelated trade-off.)
