Details:

Here's the conversation we had on irc:

jrib ― what do you think about getting rid of
irc.look.item_channel_modes and instead having
"buffer_channel_name" bar item and "buffer_channel_mode" item?
@FlashCode ― it was not done like this because "modes" are irc only (not
known by core)
@FlashCode ― and by default bars does not have any item which is specific
to
a plugin
@FlashCode ― but I agree having two items for that would be better

FiXato ― so, why not have a core bar item with the same name which gives
nothing, and have the irc plugin overwrite it when used?
@FlashCode ― FiXato: yes that what I think I'll do
@FlashCode ― it was to prevent to have an empty item in core, which is
specific to a plugin
@FlashCode ― but I guess would be easier for user to understand if it works
like that
FiXato ― not to mention I would be able to place it anywhere I want,
instead of only with the modes
@FlashCode ― sure
@FlashCode ― and maybe I could do the same for nick modes in input bar
FiXato ― go for it! :D
