Id bettercome home with him and I said I would. What a ripping thing it must beto smoke when youre upset about something. A few days after that it was a Sunday and we were all sitting out on thelawn having tea.
Id bettercome home with him and I said I would.
He was an awfully jolly chap something like Frank but not sosmart. I thought Kirk was rather a foolbut perhaps he was right about that. There was nobody in the house Iliked as much as Garnett at St.
I looked at mother and Stavely but I saw I had togo, though I couldnt imagine what for.
But we were at Spitall Junction in no time and I had to saygood-bye to them. He stammers when Pellew frightens him and hes awfully shy. They took me with them to wherethey lived. He got it for saying thatBeale was a dirty little usher on two quid a week and his washing. It might be a long time and I should have had to be all bymyself and think about everything.
I wasnt sorryId run away but I began wondering if it was as bad there as I thought.
Jim, that was the big boysname, never spoke a word but he did eat a lot. I sat between an old woman with a basket in her lapand the fat man. Then he got me into a corner and kicked me. It was always dreadful saying good-bye to her when Iwent back to St.
Ionly wish the pater had something more like Littlejohn in him but hehasnt and never will have. But I walked up and downin front of the house instead.
I dont like their walking about together in the eveningunder the cedars. I used to lie on my bedduring recreation reading Scott and Bulwer and Dickens.
There was no bullying in the house at all and Mr Thornhill wasawfully nice. He was very decent too and lent me books butI got the best ones out of the house library. He said he likedhunting but he meant shooting because he said hed got an English gun. I dont like their walking about together in the eveningunder the cedars.
I think I should have started blubbing then if Captain Forresthadnt been there. Theres a Roman Catholic chapel you can get into by a door on the broadlanding outside my bedroom.
He was in his vest with hisbraces hanging down and was doing his hair.
I used to lie on my bedduring recreation reading Scott and Bulwer and Dickens.
They stoppedthere and seemed to melt into one. I thought they might be surprised at my being there butnobody took any notice. Then we got to be rather friends and I began tofeel jollier.
