ho tradotto):

Quello che avevo detto nella mia mail precedente era:

ed in quella ancora prima:

Citando la nuova mail di RMS,

vuol dire lo stesso che avevo detto quando ho detto "circoscritto 
all'ambito del software", perché un computer ha solo due ambiti, 
software ed hardware, e ciò che non è hardware fa parte dell'ambito del 
software, inclusi i dati. Le opere che possono essere usate su un 
computer fanno parte dell'ambito software (oltre ad altri ambiti 
relativi alla loro natura), almeno finché rimangono in forma digitale (e 
non vengono per esempio pubblicate).

Difatti, il Merriam-Webster definisce il software come

> something used or associated with and usually contrasted with hardware

Quindi questo coincide con quello che avevo già detto. Quello che si può 
concludere grazie all'informazione che RMS (ed al suo utilizzo di 
"also") ci ha appena fornito è che "general" abbia più significati, e 
che quindi sia meglio usarlo come parola singola.
