If all you want is to translate xboard/Winboard user interface, then you don't
need to
deal with the backend engine(i.e. GnuChess).
There's currently gettext based localization facility checked into CVS for
xboard, so
you can start right away localizing xboard into French. The template file
resides under
po directory as xboard.pot, I'd also checked in a tr.po for Turkish. You only
need to
supply the related fr.po file.
As for Winboard, there's a pending gettext-RCfile interoperability issue to be
resolved.
I'm not aware of any progress, if at all, on this.
