[XBoard-devel] Spanish version of WinBoard

Hi, folks. Francisco Gracia has put together a Spanish version of
WinBoard. I haven't looked yet at what he did (and I may not do so
soon, since I'm still very short on time that I can spend on this
project), but it sounds interesting in several ways. See his attached
messages for details.

If what he did turns out to be cleanly extensible, maybe this can break
the logjam we got into over what method to use for internationalization.
(Recall that I was hoping to use GNU gettext, but I don't think we ever
came up with a workable way to do that for both xboard and WinBoard at
the same time.)

Either Francisco or I will check his source into CVS as a branch (or
maybe a separate tree) soon. He had some trouble accessing our CVS. I'm
hoping to help him straighten that out, but in the meantime I may do the
initial checkin myself after he emails me the code.

Dear Mr. Mann:

I have finished a spanish version of WinBoard based on 4.2.7, with several additions and modifications. Its main features are:

   - it has a history window;
- improved handling of the games and positions files, as well for saving as for retrieving; - the main part of the help file is also translated (with some updating of the text); - it should be relatively easy to translate WinBoard to other languages based on my source files, as all the strings have been collected in one file;
   - possibility of conversion of other chess notations to FEN;
- I have redistributed the options of the main menu to adapt more closely to the Windows usual style, as well as adding the required new ones;
   - I have fixed some bugs I noticed.

Please tell me if you would like to get one copy of the source files and the executable and how should I proceed to send them to you, if such were the case, I signed some time ago the documents required by the Free Software Foundation and sent a copy to you, as you probably recall.

I think that it would be convenient to make this version availble to other people through the Ridderkerk website, in case it could be useful to them. Please tell me if there is any objection to it on your side or if there is some other requisite to observe prior to it,

Best wishes

F. Gracia

That sounds very nice. Yes, I'd like to have you email me a copy of the
source and executable.

I haven't been doing any work on xboard/winboard for quite a while. It
seems I forgot to ask you to sign up for an account on
http://savannah.gnu.org so that I could add you as a member to the
xboard project there. Perhaps you could check your Spanish version into
the CVS there as a branch, and then look into merging it into the main
line.

Thanks.

Thanks for your reply.

I am sending you attached the executable
part of the spanish version of WinBoard ('WinBoardFG.zip'). The included
file 'Instrucciones.txt' gives the essential explanations and ways of using
it.

If you do not say anything to the contrary meanwhile, the source part
('WinBoardFG_src.zip', 3625 kB) will follow in a couple of days.

As to the CVS, I tried several times to access it unsuccesfully. Anyway I prefer that other more competent people evaluate my contributions and decide if they could be generally useful, so as to incorporate them to the official version.

Kind regards,

Francisco
