I do not see these changes as more relevant to translations than to the English version. On the contrary I find it a service to the English users to have a consistent English.
The translators can be as easily served by placing a translator comment somewhere in the sources explanation to them that chess engine, chess machine and chess program are used interchangeably, and may be replaced by a single term in the target language.
That comment would best placed at the first translatable text in the pot-file.
People can already translate themeu items any way they want; that does not require anyy change in the English menu texts.true, but having a consistent english version seems to be a valid effort.
