No, we would not want that. Xboard can tell the system that it is capable of handling PGN files, but it should not interfere with other programs doing the same. That would be considered a bad thing to do, and would not be tolerated by the distributions' packagers.

Indeed. Compete by merits, not by overwriting the competitor's files. This is not a war between programs. Leave it to the users to choose which viewer they want to use.
