Oh my.

Okay, I'll just be blunt: The build system X uses sucks. Imake simply 
will *have* to be replaced.

But with what? The obvious candidate is autotools; but they're also 
rather ... obtuse. Several other candidates are mentioned at 
http://pdx.freedesktop.org/tiki/tiki-index.php?page=XFreeBuildSystem. 
The final possibility is to construct our own; which I am given to 
understand was in fact discussed here.

My personal votes would be: Jam, own, autotools. In that order. What do 
others say?
