I think probably the concern is the abuse of the splashscreen. It seems
to be okay on something like GIMP, where it takes a little while to load
up... but, OTOH, some programmers hack with it to display their own
modal splash for 5 seconds of idle CPU time ... or some other display
of lazy programming (e.g., the window does not automatically dismiss/is
the wrong type). Some programs won't let you get beyond the splash
and open up an obnoxious, mandatory wizard. That's probably where
the core controversy about splashscreens comes from.
